Lethbridge College recognizes that students entering credit programs often have acquired knowledge, skills, and competencies as a result of previous learning and life experiences. Outcomes from these activities can be assessed and students can be awarded academic credits in equivalent Lethbridge College courses or be given unspecified credits that count towards a particular program of studies. These credits will assist the individual in their pursuit of an academic credential and may facilitate a career change or enhance occupational advancement.

What is PLA?

Prior Learning Assessment is the assessment or evaluation of life experiences for the purpose of awarding academic credits. This may be done by having transcripts from other recognized educational institutions evaluated for Advance Credit relative to the program for which the student has applied.  Learning gained from work experience, informal education/training activities, self study, volunteer activities, life experiences, credit courses completed more than ten years ago or those not eligible for Advance Credit can be evaluated by an Individualized Assessment. Prior Learning Credit (PLC) is not awarded simply for experience; it is awarded for learning that is documented or demonstrated.

Benefits of PLA

•    Supports the concept of lifelong learning
•    Formally recognizes previous learning thus eliminates the repetition of costly and time consuming training
•    Enhances the acquisition of educational and career goals

Next Steps to Take
